Firefly Lane Season 2 Part 1 is finally here and we’re digging into this heartbreaking twist on the season finale. Spoilers ahead for the end of the new season.
Netflix’s hit romantic drama based on Kristin Hannah’s book series of the same name has returned after a year-long hiatus with the first half of the show’s second and final season. The first part of Firefly Lane Season 2 deals with the big event that leads to a dramatic falling out between Tully and Kate.
Massive spoilers ahead for Firefly Lane Season 2 part 1
Below is how things ended in the Firefly Lane Season 2 part 1 finale. If you didn’t see the last episode or don’t want to be spoiled, now is your last chance to turn back!
Will Kate and Tully reconcile?
Kate and Tully don’t get a chance to mend their friendship at the end of Season 2 Part 1. After their fallout, they spend a year not speaking to each other and slowly try to move on with their lives. Kate enrolls in a creative writing class and tries to befriend one of her classmates, but there’s no substitute for Tully.
The season 2 part 1 finale ends with Kate being diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer. She needs to start treatment immediately. This devastating news motivates Kate to reach out to Tully for the first time in ages. Kate shows up unannounced at Tully’s building and tries to bang on her best friend’s door.
Unfortunately, just before Kate arrived, Tully left for Antarctica, where she took a job to work on a documentary about global warming. The season ends with Kate being left crying on Tully’s doorstep.
Where does Firefly Lane end in the 1970s and 1980s?
In the 1980s, the moment of Kate arriving late at Tully’s door occurs parallel to Johnny showing up at Tully and Kate’s apartment to tell Kate he loves her and wants to get back together. Johnny is late. Minutes before his arrival, Tully drives Kate to the airport so she can fly to Europe with her new boyfriend Theo.
But we do know that Kate and Johnny are getting married eventually, so the 1980s cliffhanger isn’t much of a cliffhanger. In the present, the season even ends with Johnny proposing to Kate again, and she finally says yes. This is of course before Kate’s diagnosis. I assume Part 2 will be about Kate and Tully reconciling and Kate coming to terms with her illness and treatment plan.
The 1970s story has the lowest stakes, in which Tully and Kate clean the house in preparation for a visit from Cloud’s parole officer. They believe that one of Cloud’s friends overdosed and subsequently hid his body under the stairs, but luckily he later comes to after the parole officer leaves and all is well, at least until the next visit.
