Brittney Griner is finally home after 10 months in Russia. On December 9, the WNBA star landed in Texas to reunite with her family, and while fans were happy to see her home, there was a notable difference in her appearance as seen in the early films , which were released during their flight home.

In the clipGriner, already pretty hard to miss given her 6’9″ height, is without seeing another of her key attributes: her locs. First reported by ESPNGriner recently got his hair cut to be better prepared for the winter season in Russia. “It’s very cold in there and every time she washed her hair she got cold and shivered,” Maria Blagovolina, one of Griner’s attorneys, told ESPN. “She should have waited until the New Year.”

For black people, how they style their hair can be very personal. “Black people throughout the diaspora have consistently used their hair to demonstrate or show who they are, what they feel, their identity.” Lori L. TharpsHair historian and author of “Hair Story: Unraveling the Roots of Black Hair in America($13), previously told POPSUGAR. While Griner cut her hair for practical reasons, the new style almost feels like a sign of just how much she’s been through over the past few months and how much it’s certainly changed her.

With or without her locs, the only thing that really matters is that she’s safe and back home with her family.
