The New School makes headlines as her part-time faculty, thereafter Strike on 11/16, are now forming what they say is the longest auxiliary strike in US history, and the conflict is engulfing the institution as a whole. It is one of several landmark academic labor actions ending 2022, such as the ongoing University of California strike with over 48,000 employees and others at colleges including Rueger.
On December 1st, the University and United Auto Workers Local 7902 representing TNS over 2,800 part-time lecturers entered arbitration after workers rejected the university’s “last, best, and final offer.” This offer as reported by Claudia Irizarry Aponte from the citywould have increased health care costs and “restricted access to the complaints procedure”.
On Thursday, December 8th Teen Vogue reported on 13th Street and 5th Avenue, where a group of college students in league with striking workers announced an indefinite occupation of TNS’ college center. A crowd of about 100 students, workers and employees gathered outside the doors of the university center while passing cars honked their horns in solidarity. As the students announced their occupation, the crowd erupted.
The occupation comes after ongoing conflicts between workers and the university: On April 6, The university has published its decision Withholding wages and insurance premiums from striking workers, claiming this is the case in the service of the student body and “Spring Planning” Raising concerns that the university did not expect to come to an agreement, and consider hiring scabs.
“Given the recent attacks by the New School administration on all school staff, including faculty and students, and apparent refusal to meet [the union]’s demands or even negotiate in good faith, the students have decided it is time to escalate direct action,” Student Faculty Solidarity said in a statement. The group plans to occupy the university center “until administration resumes pay, full health protection and pensions for all striking staff and a fair contract is reached with the part-time teachers.”
