Netflix released a teaser clip for their upcoming romantic comedy You guys, and Twitter users let it be known that they are not impressed.
While the upcoming flick features an enviable cast of Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, #WCW veteran Nia Long, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Lauren London, and comes from famed director Kenya Barris (who co-wrote the screenplay with Hill), all this star strength was not enough.
You guys follows a multiracial couple and their families who clash over their different backgrounds. Netflix shared the trailer on Twitter, teasing, “Opposites may attract, but some families don’t.”
The 1-minute video, which has been viewed over 2.4 million times, shows Hill’s character asking his girlfriend’s parents (played by Murphy and Long) for permission to propose to their daughter. During their conversation, Hill is grilled about his intentions — he’s asked, “Do you hang out in the hood all the time, or do you just come here for our food and our women?” — and he offers his unconventional comment on how “awesome.” Mixed race babies are, and cites Mariah Carey, Derek Jeter and “the GOAT” Malcolm X as examples.
Needless to say, the short clip does not bode well for the online community. Many have chided the film for its outdated jokes and singled out a few crucial details, like Long not looking old enough to play Lauren London’s mother (there’s only a 14-year age difference between the actors) and Barris’ one-bar Focus on multiracial families (his previous work includes Mixed and the Cheaper in dozens reboot, who introduced the family as relatives of Zach Braff and Gabrielle Union).
A Twitter user wrote, “I’m sure you could pick a better scene to tease than this one. Recycled ass black and white dynamics from the 1990s.”
Other said“I’m excited for Kenya Barris’ first foray into sci-fi as he explores the reality-altering dimension in which Jonah Hill could drag Lauren London.”
It wasn’t all doom and gloom, however. The clip, particularly Murphy’s performance, seems to have sparked some interest. one tweeted“I don’t think I’ve seen Eddie Murphy in that kind of role.”
Another agreed Write“It feels like a very different role for Eddie Murphy, but somehow he still knows how to make it hilarious while being the straight guy in the scene.”
Others rave about Murphy and Long’s timeless looks, saying“Nia & Eddie look amazing… that’s all I got.” One helpful commenter suggested a way for Netflix to make another profit from this movie, tweet“To be honest, I’m more interested in a documentary about Kenya Barris and Jonah Hill writing this film.”
Well that’s something I would watch!
Considering Netflix only released a teaser clip, the film might have a few surprises in store, but as of now, it’s a definite thumbs-down from Twitter.
You guys is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2023.
