This year’s biggest fashion moments from Hollywood-style stars were rooted in bright colors that drew attention on the red carpet and hinted that 2023 will be another year of fashion that pushes boundaries. With power dressers like Zendaya and Cardi B effectively embracing the barbiecore trend, it’s no surprise that Pantone announced a vibrant shade of magenta as its 2023 color of the year.
‘Viva Magenta’ is a harmonious hue derived from red with hints of pink and violet while matching the same bold base. Described as empowering, “it’s a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint. It’s a color that’s bold, witty and inclusive,” read a statement Pantone website. “In this age of technology, we try to be inspired by nature and what is real,” says the Color Institute’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman said.
We’ve already seen some of that energy exuding from the likes of Lori Harvey, who recently rocked a voluminous magenta Christian Cowan skirt at the Harper’s Bazaar Icons Party; Serena Williams, who translated the look with a pleated Gucci dress at the Oscars; and Cynthia Erivo, who was way ahead of the game at the 2020 SAG Awards in Schiaparelli. These pioneers wore “Viva Magenta” even before it entered the limelight.
