Okay, you primitive crackpots, listen up. Do you see that… that’s my BOOMSTICK! And if you stop reading this article, I have to apply it to you. groovy.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about the genius that is the Evil Dead trilogy. In 1981, young director Sam Raimi shot the original Evil Dead on a tight budget of $350,000, starring a completely unknown actor named Bruce Campbell, creating one of horror’s great masterpieces.
The horror genre is crammed full of low-budget movies, but they mostly end up feeling corny and, if we’re being completely honest, not very scary. But they’re still fun – both to look at and to make – so horror fans continue to consume them, despite the quality. Evil Dead surprised everyone, much like the creeping evil in the film, by being justifiably terrifying. The secret was simplicity.
Due to the tight budget, Raimi had to get creative instead of building a big fancy monster. What’s brilliant is that we never really see the “evil” in the film, we just see its point of view as it stalks the unsuspecting college kids.
Of course, if Campbell hadn’t hammered it to the nth degree, this wouldn’t have worked, but he was up for the task and the rest is history. Throughout the trilogy, the horror elements are toned down and the comedy ramped up, but don’t think that Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness aren’t masterpieces in their own right. Army of Darkness is one of the most quotable films in the world. How many times have you caught yourself saying “hail the king baby” or “give me some sugar baby”. Now that I think about it, Ash Williams sure says baby a lot, doesn’t he?
Were it not for Raimi’s ingenuity and the hilarity of Campbell’s narration, these films would likely have been forgotten within weeks of their release. Instead, they became the kind of horror institutions that we watch and watch over and over again. As you can see in the gallery below, there are a ton of silly and creative tattoos celebrating the timeless series.
Before we let you enjoy the tattoos, if you decide to get your own Evil Dead tattoo, you should take care to take proper care of it while it heals. Otherwise Your tattoo may go bad and you need to cut it off. And as cool as it may look in the movies, something tells me you don’t want to spend the rest of your life with a chainsaw on your arm.
