With their voices. As Balenciaga continues to face backlash over an ad for its spring/summer 2023 collection, celebrities are speaking out against the brand – and taking action.
Jason Aldeans wife, Brittany Aldean, shared her perspective via Instagram on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The 34-year-old North Carolina native uploaded — and subsequently deleted — a photo of herself holding bags full of Balenciaga products and appearing to throw them in the trash. “It’s trash day @balenciaga,” she captioned her post.
Brittany’s social media activity comes shortly after the fashion brand made a public statement about the campaign for its upcoming line. The ad featured children with purses – designed to look like teddy bears in BDSM-inspired clothing – while surrounded by other Balenciaga items. Additional images that did not include the children appeared to show some pages from a Supreme Court case on child pornography.
The controversial marketing sparked an uproar on social media, and the brand pulled out the images amid the scandal. “We sincerely apologize for any offense our Christmas campaign may have caused. Our plush bear bags should not have been shown with children in this campaign. We immediately removed the campaign from all platforms,” read a statement shared via Balenciaga’s Instagram Story on November 23. “We apologize for displaying disturbing documents in our campaign. … We condemn in the strongest terms the abuse of children in any form. We stand for the safety and well-being of children.”
A few days later, the company elaborated further on the decisions leading up to the photoshoot in a lengthy statement. “This was a wrong decision by Balenciaga combined with our failure to evaluate and validate images. Responsibility for this rests solely with Balenciaga,” read an Instagram memo. “We want to learn from our mistakes and find ways in which we can contribute. Balenciaga reiterates its sincere apologies for the offense we have caused and apologizes to talent and partners.”
Along with Brittany Lala Kent expressed her concerns about the ad before it was withdrawn. The 32-year-old Bravo star claimed via her Instagram Story that she doesn’t own any Balenciaga clothes and encouraged the brand to “do better”.
As the controversy flared up, Kim Kardashian was called in for her close collaboration with the fashion house. She broke her silence about the “disturbing” photoshoot on November 27.
“As a mother of four, I was shocked by the disturbing images. Child safety must be given paramount consideration and any attempts to normalize child abuse of any kind should have no place in our society – period,” she tweeted. “I appreciate Balenciaga’s campaign removal and apologies. If I speak to them, I believe they will understand the seriousness of the problem and will take the necessary measures to ensure that this never happens again.”
