It’s a Britney Spears musical, bitch!
Before you grab your Catholic schoolgirl uniform or red patent leather overalls, this isn’t going to be a musical based on the singer’s life. Similar to Broadway classic Mamma Mia!, the musical comedy will feature songs from the 41-year-old’s legendary music catalog – such as “Oops!…I Did It Again”, “Lucky”, “Circus” and “Toxic”. ‘ – appropriate to the story.
The musical, titled Once Upon a One More Time (One Bite, But Whimsically Delightful), follows several fairytale princesses, including Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty, as they work their way through a collection of Grimms’ fairy tales with her fortnightly book club, by meeting. A renegade fairy godmother answers their wish for new reading material and brings them the feminist classic “The Feminine Mystique”, which spurs a “royal revelation”.
The show will debut on Broadway in 2023, per diversity. Previews begin at the Marquis Theater on Broadway ahead of opening night on June 22nd. Hip-hop choreographers Keone and Mari Madrid will direct the musical, while the cast has yet to be announced.
“Once Upon a One More Time” already has Spears’ seal of approval. When the musical was first announced in 2019, the singer said in a statement to Deadline, “I’m so excited to have a musical of my songs – especially one set in such a magical, character-filled world that I grew up in am who I love and adore. This is a dream come true for me!”
Spears is not involved in the musical and the news comes a year after she was released from her 13-year conservatory.
