Just when we thought we couldn’t love the dynamic in between Sadie Sink and Dylan o’brien -> actor at 13 minutes All too good: the short film, we find another reason. In a December 12 interview with diversity, Taylor Swift, 32, revealed the kitchen fight scene between Sadie, 20, and Dylan, 31, wasn’t fully scripted – meaning the talented actors flooded the room with fiery emotion and dialogue on the spot. “It was partly improvised. I had written that fight with the same slur,” the record-breaking musician explained to the playwright Martin McDonagh to the diversity‘s Directors on Directors series.
“There were just a few things that Dylan would blurt out or Sadie would say, and I’d just sit at the monitor and be like, ‘Oh my God. We keep that on average,” she recalls proudly. Taylor also noted that the scene came to life so beautifully the first time that they filmed it without editing until they were about “85, 90 percent through the scene.”
Taylor also recalled knowing Sadie and Dylan would be the right people for the film after seeing their previous work. “I saw Sadie come in stranger things, and I thought she had such a presence. She has so much empathy for her,” she gushed. “I mean, you can just see micro-emotions flashing on her face that I don’t usually see in performances. And I was like, ‘She’s never been a romantic lead and I wonder if she’d be interested in playing a young woman going through her first catastrophic, catastrophic heartbreak.’”
Dylan, who rose to fame starring in MTVs teenage wolf between 2011 and 2017, previously spoke about how fulfilling it was filming the whole thing All too good: the short film in two days, most of which was unscripted. “When we actually got to it, we just acted out those scenes. So it’s been a really fulfilling couple of days and it’s been an amazing exercise,” he gushed in a March interview The Hollywood Reporter. “We just got into it at that point and we played through those scenes, especially the dramatic ones like the breakup scene or the fight scene in the kitchen.”
He also noted that the music should never be interrupted during the fight scene in the kitchen, but Taylor immediately came up with the idea. “That was actually Taylor’s call. After we did just one shot of the kitchen scene, she came over and was like, ‘That’s it. I will use this dialogue. We’ll play that. They’re right in your pocket. Let’s just do it again,'” he recalled.
In her interview with diversityTaylor said she chose to keep the kitchen fight scene with dialogue and no music because she felt it was “important” to get a strong glimpse into its dynamic.
Taylor’s conversation about her short film follows Searchlight Pictures’ announcement that it will produce a film adaptation of an original screenplay by the Grammy Award-winning actress. “Taylor is a one-of-a-kind artist and storyteller. It is a real pleasure and privilege to work with her as she embarks on this exciting and new creative journey,” the production company said in a press release vulture. Taylor is set to direct the film.
