The 2023 Golden Globes are attempting a triumphant return after last year’s virtual ceremony, which was brought on by a leadership change and criticism for its lack of black representation. But will they pull through with their heavy luggage and boycott of award contender Brendan Fraser? We will see.
This morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will kick off awards season with the announcement of the 2023 Golden Globe Awards nominees by George and Mayan Lopez. And judging by the fresh wave of new movies and TV shows, some big organizational changes have been made.
The HFPA has announced its launch four new categories at the ceremony, including Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series/Musical Comedy or Drama, Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series/Musical Comedy or Drama, Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series/Anthology or Motion Picture Made for Television, and Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series /anthology or a TV movie. They also welcomed 103 new voters (from 62 countries) to diversify the demographics of their electoral body.
Now comes the fun part: who gets nominated? There were a lot of good new releases. As, Very much. A huge number of blockbusters hit the big screen this year, such as the much-anticipated one Avatar 2: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Steven Spielbergs (aka The Father of Blockbusters) The Fabelmans. Audiences and critics have also responded well to indie releases this year, with notable mentions of A24 After sun, Everything everywhere at once and The whale.
The streamers came out strong with lively features like Cha Cha Real smooth and Nannyand more importantly, they continue to dominate the TV game with a new episode of The crown and the debut of severance pay. These two will, of course, be up against fan favorites The White Lotus season 2 and Abbott Elementary School. Overall, the odds are stacked.
The 80th Golden Globes, hosted by Jerrod Carmichael, will air Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at 8 p.m. ET a on NBC and Peacock.
