Warning: major spoilers ahead for The White Lotus Season 2 finale.
Sure, the second season of The White Lotus literally just wrapped but we’re already hungry The White Lotus Season 3 cast and location. Thankfully, creator Mike White has offered some hints as to where his next luxury resort might be planted and what themes the series will address.
While season one jetted us to Hawaii, and season two planted us among the fabled palaces of Italy, White thinks the resort’s next expansion could head further east. In a clip unwrapping the explosive and surprising season finale, he revealed his thought process behind the decision in a post-finale featurette for HBO. “The first season was about money, and the second season is about sex,” White said. “I think season three might be a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality. It feels like taking another spin at White Lotus could be a rich tapestry.”
Whether someone is transferred in The White Lotus However, the cast of Season 3 is another looming question. Jennifer Coolidgeis irregular Tanya was the only character to rotate between seasons one and two (apart from her absent and now villainous husband Greg (Jon Gries)), but the shocking revelation that it was her body in the water at the start of the series means that connection is there now severed. Discussing her untimely death, White continued in the post-finale debrief that Italy saw itself as a suitable place to put the beloved character to bed.
“I thought it would be so fun to bring Tanya back because she’s such a great character, but maybe that’s the journey for her, a journey into her death. Not that I really wanted to kill Tanya because I love her as a character and obviously love Jennifer, but I just felt like we’re going to Italy, she’s such a diva – a larger than life female archetype – it felt like we could make up our own opera ending to Tanya’s life and story.” Her death had been heavily hinted at in the episodes, not least when she was moved to tears by the opera Madam Butterfly where, unsurprisingly, the main female protagonist dies at the end.
Greg still has scope for his unwanted return, especially after his homicidal plan to kill Tanya and get away with their money left his four accomplices dead on a yacht and Tanya unceremoniously drifted in the water after a misstep off the boat. Whether he ends up with her money due to her death or is implicated in the plot to kill her really depends on the disheveled assistant’s moral compass Portia (Hayley Lu Richardson). As one of the few people vaguely aware of the conspiracy against Tanya, she could be in danger. Jack told her to keep her head down, but being able to keep her silence might make for an interesting plot development.
