If you’re ever wondering why Netflix isn’t starting live streaming of sports, Ted Sarandos has the answer. The streaming channel was first established in 1997 and thanks to some originals like e.g Orange is the new black, House of Cards, Dark, Ozark and Stranger Things. The pandemic boom has only helped the platform grow into a streaming giant.
But the World Cup season has got people wondering why Netflix hasn’t yet tried to keep up with its competitors by offering live streaming. His co-CEO gave a possible reason for this, but fans have now started trolling him over his pro-profit statement.
What do fans think of Netflix dodging the idea of streaming sports live?
With the start of the World Cup season, some streaming channels that broadcast them are leading the viewer competition. But Netflix has kind of moved away from that. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos gave the reason why. MorningBrews posted a expression by Ted Sarandos on Netflix, “We are not anti-sport, we are pro-profit.”
He described the idea of streaming sports as “losing profit”. but viewers don’t seem too keen on the idea. People made fun of his answer in the comments, that the channel is already suffering losses. Netflix has suffered the loss of many paying subscribers in the wake of the pandemic.
In April 2022, there were reports of the streaming platform losing at least 200,000 accounts. At the same time, one fan pointed out that live streaming of sports is the reason Hulu has gained subscribers.
However, some people are also defending Sarandos’ decision to stick with shows, as sports streaming can be an expensive proposition for the channels. While some also admire him for speaking openly about his capitalist ideas.
To attract more paying viewers, the platform has developed an ad-based subscription, but its success has yet to be tested.
