A year after NBC decided not to air the Golden Globes because a Los Angeles Times Report of troubles within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Globes will return to TV – with Jerrod Carmichael as host. “We are thrilled to have Jerrod Carmichael host the historic 80th Golden Globe Awards,” he said Helen Hoehnethe HFPA President, in a statement obtained by PERSONS. “His comedic talent entertained and thrilled audiences while providing thought-provoking moments that are so relevant in our day and age. Jerrod is the special talent this show is calling for to kick off awards season.”
The 79th Annual Golden Globes took place in January 2022, with the awards being announced via social media. NBC’s decision not to air the program was in response to the Times Report claiming there are no black journalists among HFPA members amid other ethical issues.
Although the HFPA promised to implement reforms, the 2023 event is likely to be mired in one of the HFPA’s biggest controversies. Brendan Fraserwho was acclaimed for his performance in Darren Aronofsky’s Best Actor The whaleblamed the former HFPA President Philip Berk from sexually abused in 2003. With Brendan vowing not to attend the Golden Globes even if he’s nominated, his absence will be an embarrassment the HFPA – and host Jerrod Carmichael – will have to reconcile.
With that in mind, here’s what you should know about the 2023 Golden Globes host.
Jerrod is from North Carolina
Jerrod was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His family didn’t have much money growing up. Jerrod graduated from Robert B. Glenn High School in 2005. When he turned 20, Jerrod moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of becoming a stand-up comedian.
His career began with open mic nights
Like many comedians, Jerrod started out doing open mic nights. He usually performed at the Comedy Store in West Hollywood. Eventually, Jerrod made a name for himself and was noticed by Hollywood bosses. This led to him getting his first official acting role in the 2014 film Neighbors Next Zac Efron, Rose Byrn, Seth Rogenand David Franco. Aside from a few acting roles, Jerrod has released two stand-up HBO specials.
He co-created a sitcom
Jerrod’s most notable work to date is his semi-biographical sitcom, The Carmichael Show. He co-created, co-wrote, produced and starred on the project, which aired on NBC for three seasons from 2015 to 2017. The series followed a fictionalized version of Jerrod’s family in North Carolina. Amber Stevens West played his girlfriend Lil Rey Howery played his brother Tiffany Hadish played his wife Loretta Devine played his mother, and David Alan Grier played his father.
In April 2022 he was the host Saturday night live for the first time.
He has transitioned into acting
Jerrod’s acting career started with Neighbors and hasn’t slowed down since. He appeared in the 2016 sequel, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. He had supporting roles in the Oscar-nominated film The Disaster Artist and in Transformers: The Last Knight. He directed, produced and starred in the 2021 comedy At three. Jerrod will be starring in the upcoming movie Poor things With Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Markus Ruffaloand Ramy Youssef.
Jerrod has been open about his sexuality
In his HBO comedy special home videos, Jerrod revealed that he has had relationships with both men and women. “I’ve made out with guys before” he said his mother, Cynthia. Jerrod also opened up about his sexuality during a Interview in June 2019 With The Breakfast Club. “Here is The Thing: I will always present things as honestly as I can. I just accept that if you don’t accept that — you won’t accept me, you won’t accept my work,” he said. “I agree with that. I’m cool with letting that go. I don’t think this is in any way a disruption to the life, career, or personal relationships that are important to me. Express what you feel. Be yourself.”
