In a word, yes. Hair transplantation uses your own hair taken from the more abundant parts of your body, usually your neck. Then, follicular units consisting of 1 to 4 separate hairs are collected from this donor area and transplanted to thinned or bald areas. Within 10 months, fuller hair is clearly visible. Most men and women with male or female pattern baldness are candidates for hair transplantation. Seeing is believing, so visit our before and after hair transplant gallery.
Why is there confusion about whether hair transplant works or not?
The results of hair transplantation are not instantaneous. You can’t go into a clinic bald and leave with your hair full. Because the loss of transplanted hair is a normal part of the process. This is because the hair goes through stages called anagen, catagen, and telogen. The transplanted hair will only be visible after going through the cycles and will return to anagen. The chart below shows the cycle.
What is shock loss?
Some patients experience a condition called “shock loss.” This is the thinning of the hair in the area where the grafts were placed in response to the trauma and inflammation from the transplant procedure. Hair then typically grows back after exiting the resting phase and resumes a new growth cycle. The use of 5% minoxidil can reduce the risk of shock loss. While this can be frustrating, it is also temporary.
an emotional journey
Dr. Harris can usually apply the required amount of grafts for a complete transplant in a single session. Some patients even go back to work the next day. What doesn’t happen overnight is a full hair. “I do my best to manage expectations,” Harris says. “It can be difficult to spend the money, go through the procedure and then basically sit back and wait. Some men and women get quite worried at this stage. I reassure them that results will come as long as they follow the simple post-operative instructions we’ve given.”
requires patience
After 3-4 months of a procedure with no evidence of success, it can be hard to believe that the final results will match or exceed your expectations. But that’s exactly what will happen between 10 and 12 months. At this point, the follicular units have rooted and started to grow, just as they were at the original donor site. After a few months, you look in the mirror and ask yourself, “Does hair transplant work?” you ask. Your answer and the evidence to prove it is in your head.
