in the yellowstone Season 5 Episode 6 titled “Cigarettes, Whiskey, A Meadow And You”, the Duttons and their cowboys have many reasons to remember why they are fighting so hard to keep Yellowstone and their land in Paradise Valley . After a near-perfect day herding the cattle, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) retreat to their own little piece of heaven for a romantic rendezvous. While Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Tate (Breckin Merrill) work on healing, John (Kevin Costner) enjoys cowboy driving with this old pal Emmett (Buck Taylor), who is unexpectedly caught in his sleep.
In the midst of preparations for the branding/spring party, Summer (Piper Pearbo) tries to better understand John and his way of life by visiting the Dutton family cemetery and listening to Monica’s (Kelsey Asbille) wise advice. Back in town, Jamie (Wes Bentley) and Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) turn his home into a love shack and plan their next move against the governor, while Sarah reveals her true mission. Finally, on the Broken Rock reservation, both Mo Brings Plenty (Mo Brings Plenty) and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) are caught off guard when Angela Blue Thunder (Q’orianka Kilcher) shows up with a special friend who supports Thomas’ rival for chairman .
From a blissful sunset at Rip and Beth’s special place to the death of a real cowboy, here are 5 things to watch out for in Episode 6.
SARAH ATWOODS ‘TRUE’ MOTIVES REVEALED
Jamie is rightly wary of Sarah’s sudden and intense affection. After meeting up with him after a drink in the Deerfield Club dressing room in Season 5 Episode 4, Sarah’s intent to murder John’s character so that he won’t be re-elected is clear. But what does she want from Jamie? She cleans up after a wild night of sex.
As she prepares to leave, she asks Jamie, “Why aren’t you governor? You clearly have what it takes. They orchestrated the lease and construction without giving the company any legal recourse, which is a complete mess.” Prone to flattery, Jamie listens as Sarah explains her plan: “Get your governor elected, put ours Reinstate the lease and push our project through with a contract you can’t get out of and save this state from its policy of burying your head in the sand and hoping the rest of the world will just pass by.” Jamie did no problem bringing about the downfall of his estranged adoptive father and his precious ranch – but can he trust her? I do not think so.
THOMAS RAINWATER’S Rival GETS A NEW ALLY
Angela’s attempt to remove Thomas from power on the Broken Rock Reservation picks up steam mid-season. When Mo discovers – due to the helicopter and dozens of security service personnel – that the President of the United States is making a surprise stop, conditionally, he doesn’t have to worry about who is responsible for the Commander-in-Chief’s presence.
When Thomas arrives at the crime scene, he is greeted by Angela herself. Thomas argues that his approval is required for reservation gatherings, but Angela points to a loophole in the tribal charter: “This is not a gathering—this is a salutation from the President of the United States.” minute, but justifies her actions: “It’s important that people know that we’re not invisible.” As the president’s director of Native American affairs, Angela also has his support for Martin Kills Many (Christian Wassana) as chair of Broken Rock secured. He was briefly introduced in Season 5 Episode 3. May the best man win!
THE DUTTON FAMILY CEMETERY
poor summer With a battered face and no direction, she wanders through Yellowstone until she finds the Dutton family cemetery, where we see two familiar names: James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill). Although the numbers are difficult to discern, it looks like James died in 1893. If this date is correct, we may have seen the events leading up to James’ death in Season 4 Episode 8. After James is shot while chasing horse thieves, we see him stumbling onto the family porch. In a plea to the Almighty, James says quietly, “You can’t let me die out here. You won’t make it.” After he collapses inside, the camera cuts to a long shot and we can only hear Margaret screaming. Seems pretty definitive doesn’t it?
As Summer looks at the tombstones, Monica approaches. “The family has been here for so long,” says Summer. “And it was my family’s before it was theirs,” says Monica. Seeing the newly dug grace of Monica’s son, Summer apologizes and begins to leave. “If your goal is to meet John Dutton, then you should be right here,” Monica replies simply. Summer is finally beginning to understand his connection to his family home.
RIP FOUND YOUR MEADOW
Remember Rip and Beth’s hasty wedding in the season 4 finale? Well, the circumstances were far from ideal. Before the rushed ceremony, Rip said to Beth, “I thought you wanted to find a place that’s just ours,” and she replied, “I do, and we’ll do that ride, I promise.” In Season 5, Episode 5 appears to have been Rip himself searching for the perfect slice of Paradise Valley for himself and Beth. Beth is moved to tears by the beauty of the landscape.
Rip reminds Beth of an earlier conversation in Season 4 Episode 6: “I found it a year ago when you said you wanted to get married in a place with no memories…until we made them.” Beth shyly admits, “I did kinda rushed the wedding, didn’t it?” Beth explains, “In my defense, I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life in prison, so I had to go for the medal.” Oh, those crazy kids!
REST IN PEACE EMMET WALSH
Even a cowboy like John needs an older, wiser confidant, and he had one in local rancher Emmett Walsh (gun smoke Stern Buck Taylor), who appeared in 7 episodes over the course of 5 seasons. Emmett’s last day on earth is the stuff of cowboy dreams: he spends it herding cattle, fishing and sleeping under a sky full of stars. As they settled down for the night, John said to him, “I’ve come to believe that perfection only lives in small moments. Cannot be sustained for hours, only instances, little touches of time and the world becomes imperfect again. That day almost proved me wrong.” “Well, John, if it wasn’t perfect, it was bloody close,” replies Emmet as he drifts off into his final sleep.
When John discovers him the next morning, he is sad, but surprisingly also jealous. “Well, Emmett, I couldn’t have thought of a better death if you’d paid me. You really deserve it, old friend,” praises John. After coordinating the removal of Emmett’s body, John quickly rides to inform Emmett’s widow, Ella (Anne Cullimore Decker), and the two share a touching moment. Emmett had been a reliable and wise presence in John’s life. He will be missed.
