Who is Lottie? Firefly Lane?
As previously mentioned, the season two premiere introduces viewers to a nerdy curly-haired Lottie for the first time. She appears in flashbacks to the 80’s, working alongside Johnny, Tully, Kate and the crew while openly lusting after Johnny at every opportunity. When she finds out that Johnny is dating Kate, Lottie switches to passive-aggressive mode. The claws come out, she begins to be rude to Kate, and the two share an awkward exchange in the office bathroom, where Lottie makes Kate doubt Johnny’s feelings for her by bringing up his history with Tully. The worst!
We forget about Lottie when we jump back to the early 2000s because we’re too busy worrying about whether Johnny survived the blast in Iraq that sent him to the hospital. Luckily, as soon as Tully and Kate arrive in Berlin, they learn that Johnny will make a full recovery. But when they talk to him in his hospital room, a very chic and poised woman comes in and greets him. That mysterious woman? LOTTE!!!!!!!! She has a sleek, short haircut, is stylish as hell, has had a successful career as an international war correspondent and now calls herself “Charlie”. As Kate and Tully stare at them in disbelief, we learn that she met Johnny on his third day in Iraq and the two have been in touch ever since. OK!
In Episode 2, Charlie accompanies Johnny back to America, where he is recuperating at home with Kate and Marah. The two appear to be joined at the hip while working together at work, and it’s no secret that Charlie still has feelings for him. Just like in the old days, Charlie never misses an opportunity to brag about himself or burn Kate. She even explained it when they worked together: “I thought I was a Kate but now I’m a Tully,” implying that she had some kind of glow. POOH!
Throughout the season we see Charlie growing closer to Johnny and Marah, and when she and Johnny work together one night, they almost share a kiss. At the last second, Johnny saw an aloe plant from Kate on his counter and decided to end a possible romance. But when Charlie joined him for Kate’s part of the Fourth of July in episode 6, she let him know she was still a romantic option. Charlie boldly rolled into the event in a sheer dress with a bikini underneath, thinking it was a pool party, and while the revealing wardrobe seemed orchestrated, she ended up needing her suit when Kate accidentally pushed her into the pool. However! Before they go in, Charlie tells Johnny that she turned down going to Moscow to write a play for him The Atlantic because of him. She admitted she has feelings for him – and always has – and put the ball in his court. But Johnny ended the night by kissing Kate, so farewell from Charlie for now!
