Taylor Swift gives her fans even more material to analyze. A little over a month after the release of her 10th studio album, Midnights, Searchlight Pictures announced that the singer-songwriter will direct her first feature-length film for the production company. Swift also wrote the original screenplay.
“Taylor is a one-of-a-kind artist and storyteller,” said David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield, presidents of Searchlight Pictures, in a joint statement shared with diversity on December 9th. “It is a real pleasure and privilege to work with her as she embarks on this exciting and new creative journey.”
While this will be her first feature film, Swift isn’t behind the camera for the first time: she previously directed All Too Well: The Short Film, which accompanied her 2021 re-recorded album Red (Taylor’s Version). The 14 minute film starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien won multiple MTV Video Music Awards and American Music Awards. It’s also about Best Music Video at the upcoming Grammys.
The year before, Swift directed Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions, a Disney+ documentary about the making of her eighth studio album of the same name. Swift has also directed several of her own music videos, including 2010’s “Mine” and more recently “Anti-Hero” and “Bejeweled” from Midnights.
Swift’s list of acting credits, on the other hand, is much smaller. To date, she has had guest appearances on Valentine’s Day, The Giver, Cats and Amsterdam. It’s unclear if Swift will also star in her currently untitled feature film, and casting announcements have not yet been made.
