It would not be unusual to assume that a royal engagement would be celebrated with a formal affair. Tiaras, dignitaries, maybe a speech or two, but Prince Harry and Meghan Markle most certainly do things differently. In episode two of the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, it was revealed that they actually threw a onesie party after Harry popped the question.
Lucy Fraser, a friend of the couple who appears in the episode, reveals how they were “so lucky” to be engaged. When the official announcement of their engagement was due to be announced to the public a few weeks later, the couple threw a low key party with some of their closest friends. “Everyone wore animal onesies,” says Fraser. “And Meg and Harry wore matching penguin onesies because penguins mate for life and they were so cute. And we had so much fun.” Could that be any cuter?
Harry’s marriage proposal was also super romantic. He had to propose in the UK as he had to get the Queen’s permission at the time, so while Harry was cooking up a roast chicken at Frogmore Cottage, Harry opened a magnum of champagne, which made Meghan immediately suspicious. He then put 15 electric candles outside with a picnic blanket and got on one knee to ask her to marry him. And of course the answer was yes! “She felt like they could take on the world,” says friend Lindsay Jill Roth.
The cute detail is followed by another revelation How Harry and Meghan met. Contrary to popular belief, they weren’t necessarily sent on a blind date by a mutual friend — they first met on Instagram. Sort of. Harry spotted a picture of Meghan with one of his friends – with a Snapchat Dalmatian filter – on his Instagram feed. He called his pal to see if they could get in touch with her and the pair met up at Soho House for a date shortly after. The rest is history.
A wedding, two children and a transatlantic move later, the couple’s new docuseries are set to tell their side of the story, from when they first met to their retirement from the royal family. Dealing with systematic racism, press interference, family dynamics and her upbringing, the Netflix series is an uncompromising portrayal of a royal love story. We only wish there were more photos of the couple wearing penguin onesie together.
