Applying eyeshadow isn’t rocket science. If you know a few basic rules, it’s quick and easy. We’ll tell you how it works and have a few extra tricks for you.
For a perfect look you only have to apply a little eye shadow in addition to mascara. Unfortunately, many give up this great makeup product altogether because they are unsure of how to use it properly. And yes, if you put eyeshadow in the wrong places, eyes can quickly appear smaller or eye shapes ugly changed. Applying eye shadow: this is how it works
You only need a few things for perfect eyeshadow eyes. Maybe you already have them at home so you can get started right away.
That’s how it works:
- the base: Before you apply the eyeshadow, you should use a so-called Use eyeshadow base. This ensures that the eyeshadow can be distributed evenly and stays where it should be for a long time. Apply the eyeshadow base from the upper lash line to the brow, i.e. on the fixed and movable lid. Then you can lightly powder the whole thing to fix it even better.
- The color: In order for the eyeshadow to work properly and the eyes to get more depth, you should use two different shades of eyeshadow work – a lighter one and a darker one. First, you should apply the lighter eyeshadow to the entire movable eyelid, i.e. from the upper lash line up to the crease. Now apply the dark tone from the outer corner of the eye up to the crease of the eyelid. Make sure that you blend the eye shadow well or smudge it a little so that there are no hard edges and transitions. If you like, you can also emphasize the upper and lower lash line with the dark eyeshadow. This makes the eyelashes look a little thicker and the make-up more dramatic.
- set accents: With the lighter shade of eyeshadow or a another light eyeshadow (there are also highlighters) you can now set additional accents that can have an enormous effect. Your gaze will open up and you will appear even friendlier if you apply the light shade to the inner corner of your eye. You can also create a great effect for emphasizing your eye area by applying the light shade above the movable lid below the brow.
- infatuate: At the end you should check again: Are the transitions from light to dark smooth and blended well together, or are there hard, unnatural-looking edges? Possibly again Correct with fingers or brush and the eyeshadow look is done!

What is the best way to apply eye shadow?
Eye shadow can be applied in different ways. It is purely a matter of taste which one you choose. Here are the pros and cons of each technique:
With your fingers: Many feel that they can work better and more safely with their fingers than with a brush or applicator. Larger areas in particular, such as the eyelids, can be worked on quickly and easily with your fingers. However, it becomes more difficult if you want to apply more detailed make-up, for example if you want to emphasize the lash line. It certainly makes more sense to choose an applicator.
With the brush: An eyeshadow brush comes in handy. With a good example, it is possible to cover larger areas with eyeshadow as well as to master more delicate work such as eyelashes or eyelid creases. Brushes that are slightly angled are useful here so that you can master various challenges with them.
With the applicator: Eye shadow applicators are small, often pointed sponges on a handle. With them, the eyeshadow can be applied particularly precisely and finely. It is worth having such an applicator at hand, especially for applying the darker shades.
Applying eye shadow: which color is best for me?
Here you can actually say: Whatever you like is right! However, there is the possibility of making your own eye color shine by choosing the right color. And who wouldn’t want that?! In order for this to work, one important basic rule should be followed:
“If possible, choose a complementary color to your eye color as an eyeshadow color.”
Why is that? Quite simply: Complementary colors are the colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel – i.e. opposite. This causes colors to emphasize each other through the contrast with each other. In detail it looks like this:
Green eyes
The best way to emphasize green eyes is to use them with shades of red emphasize Red is the complementary color of green. However, since red is quite extreme, it is also possible to refer to tones such as purple and pink to fall back. This as well brownish nuances make green eyes shine.
Blue eyes
The complementary color of blue is yellow. An eye shadow in yellow might be an option for evening make-up, but it is probably less suitable for everyday use. Brown eyes

Blue and greenish eyeshadow nuances also look great. However, you should be careful with yellowish or reddish tones. These can quickly make you look sallow.
