Prince Harry is honest and open about his past. The Duke of Sussex opened up about wearing a Nazi uniform, including a swastika armband, to a 2005 birthday party and the resulting scandal. “It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I was so ashamed afterwards. All I wanted to do was get it right,” Prince Harry said in the third episode of his Netflix docuseries. Harry & Megan.
After the controversy, Prince Harry’s response was to make amends for what he had done. He spoke to the chief rabbi in London, which he says had a “profound influence” on him. He also traveled to Berlin to speak with a Holocaust survivor.
“I could have just ignored it and probably made the same mistakes over and over again in my life. But I learned from that,” stresses Prince Harry.
Prince Harry is the first to acknowledge some of the issues with the family he grew up in. “Sometimes in this family you’re more part of the problem than part of the solution. And there’s a tremendous amount of unconscious bias,” the 38-year-old says in the docuseries.
He continues, “The thing about unconscious bias is that it’s actually nobody’s fault. But once it’s pointed out or identified within you, you have to do it right. It’s education. It’s consciousness. And it’s constant work for everyone, including me.”
The docuseries brings on Princess Michael of Kent Wearing a Blackamoor brooch, widely considered racist, became one of Meghan’s first royal events in 2017. The royal family is currently embroiled in yet another racism scandal Lady Susan Husseythe late Queen Elizabeth II’s lady-in-waiting Prince Williams Godmother asked the leader of the black British charity Ngozi Fulani where she “really came from”.
Lady Hussey resigned from her post and Buckingham Palace released a statement: “We take this incident very seriously and immediately investigated to find out all the details. In this case, unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments were made. In the meantime, the person concerned would like to sincerely apologize for the injuries caused and has resigned from their volunteer position with immediate effect. All members of the household are reminded of the diversity and inclusivity guidelines, which they must adhere to at all times.”
A spokesman for Prince William also released a statement: “I was really disappointed to hear about the guest’s experience. Racism has no place in our society. These comments were unacceptable and it is right that the individual resigned with immediate effect.”
