Mean Girls: The Musical debuted on Broadway in 2018 and embarked on a national tour a year later. Fey announced that development on the film had begun in January 2020. Like the original film, the film will be produced by Fey and Saturday Night Live executive Lorne Michaels. The musical follows much of the same storyline as the 2004 film of the same name, but there’s no telling how closely the second film adaptation will stay with the original script.
“I’m extremely excited to bring ‘Mean Girls’ back to the big screen,” said Fey of the 2020 film. “It was incredibly satisfying to see how much the film and musical meant to audiences. I’ve spent 16 years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe and I love them very much.”
Earlier this month, Lohan and fellow Mean Girls co-star Amanda Seyfried both said they were ready for a Mean Girls sequel about their characters as adults. There’s no word on the release date yet, though the film is set to debut on Paramount+.
