Prepare to get emotional! The long-awaited MAC x Whitney Houston The collection launches on December 8th and each product in the line embodies the iconic beauty and spirit of the late singer.
Named after Nippy (the nickname Whitney’s father gave her as a child) and inspired by the diva’s favorite glamorous shades and looks, the twelve limited-edition capsule products include lipsticks, high-shine lip gloss, blush, a gold highlighter aptly named Just Whitney and an eyeshadow palette designed to replicate the singer’s shimmering smoky eyes. A fabulous 80’s style disco cosmetic bag and eyelashes complete the group.
How will you know if you’re really going to love it? These shades are exact replicas of the singer’s signature musts. MAC worked with Pat Houston, Whitney E. Houston’s executor of the estate (and Whitney’s sister-in-law and long-time manager throughout her life) to create—and even help name—the products and give the collection a voice to give a personal feeling.
“Whitney loved working with color on the lips and eyes,” says Houston. “This iconic red lip has always been her favorite. If she wasn’t wearing anything else and she went out, she had to wear red lipstick,” she reveals. The singer embraced glam from a young age, “practicing her makeup in front of mirrors with a broomstick in hand,” says Houston. Sometimes she even slept with makeup on if she really loved her look.
To honor that love of beauty and create the most authentic collection possible, The Estate worked with the brand, “going through all of Whitney’s professional and personal photographs, from stage performances to interviews,” explains Houston. MAC creative director Drew Elliott and his team then “built an entire world around Whitney.” Elliot says ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ was the soundtrack that ran through all components of the process.”
But this partnership isn’t just about creating the next generation of pretty faces. The brand is also honoring the icon with a $25,000 donation to the Center for the Performing Arts in New Jerseysupports Recycled Percussion’s SchoolTime performances on December 8th and 9th in honor of Whitney and ensures the next generation of music icons have access to music education programs.
Of course, the makeup collection isn’t the only entertainment honoring Whitney this season. Sony Picture’s musical biopic about the iconic singer, I want to dance with someone, hitting theaters on December 23. In an art movement that imitates life, the film’s makeup artists used MAC products to create the on-screen looks. Lead artist Tisa Howard used lip liner in Soar for everyday looks on Star Naomi Ackieadded Retro Matte Lipstick in Flat Out Fabulous for the “how do I know” moment.
