HBO has canceled Fred Armisens Los Espookys after only 2 seasons as the cast begins work on new projects.
Julio Torres, who was co-creator and main actor Los EspookysShe is currently developing the comedy series further Small Movies as well as the coming-of-self series Happy as part of his first-look deal with HBO.
Torres and Armisen created Los Espookys with Ana Fabrega. The series follows a group of friends as they try to turn their love of horror into a successful business. In addition to Torres, Fabrega and Armisen, Bernardo Velasco, Cassandra Ciangherotti and José Pablo Minor also played.
“We are thrilled to finally bring the unique and hilarious second season of Los Espookys to viewers, more than three years after the series premiered, due to pandemic delays,” HBO said in a statement. “Thank you to Julio, Ana and Fred for the imaginative and delightfully bizarre world they have created. We are not currently planning a third season, but would welcome the opportunity to work with this cast and crew in the future.”
Part of the decision to end Los Espookys was dealing with a drop in ratings after production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Season 1 premiered in 2019 to 272,000 viewers, live and on the same day, according to Nielsen data. Throughout the season, each episode averaged around 156,000 live viewers. When Season 2 finally premiered in 2022, ratings were essentially cut in half. The first episode of the second season attracted only 104,000 total viewers.
Season 2 aired on Fridays at 11pm, which is a difficult time slot for viewers and could contribute to the slump in ratings.
Los Espookys Executive producers were Armisen, Lorne Michaels, Andrew Singer and Alice Mathias. Fabrega, Torres and Nate Young are co-executive producers.
The series was produced by Broadway Video in association with Antigravico, Más Mejor and Fabula.
