An official sequel to Mean Girls isn’t in the works yet, but it is Amanda Seyfried and Lindsay Lohan wouldn’t mind if it was. “I would kill just to do a week where we all play our own roles.mean girls‘ on Broadway,” said Seyfried, who played Plastics member Karen Smith, in a Nov. 30 feature Interview Magazine. “That would be really fun,” replied Lohan, who played lead character Cady Heron.
Seyfried added, “Because a ‘Mean Girls 2’ is never going to happen, is it?” to which her former co-star said, “I don’t know. I heard something about it being a movie musical and I was like, ‘Oh no. We can’t do that. It has to be the same tone.’” Seyfried agreed, noting that author and star Tina Fey “is busy”, but “she will take care of it.”
None of the stars addressed the fact that a movie called Mean Girls 2 actually premiered in 2011, despite featuring an all-new cast aside from the return of Tim Meadows as principal Ron Duvall. Regardless of whether another Mean Girls sequel ever comes along, Seyfried is grateful the cast has stayed in touch over the years. “Listen, we’re all part of each other’s worlds whether we like it or not, and it’s really nice to be in touch as adults,” she told Lohan. “Yeah, everyone’s still the same,” Lohan added. “It’s fun to have certain memories that we can’t share with anyone.”
Back in 2020, Lohan revealed that she’s just as nostalgic for the film as the rest of us. “I think I stuck to it [‘Mean Girls’] for a really long time,” she said in an interview with David Spade, per Refinery29. “To work with Tina [Fey]and the whole crew again, and [director] Mark water. That was really what I wanted. I was excited to do that.” She added that the sequel’s existence was ultimately “all in her hands.”
Lohan and Seyfried aren’t the only ones interested in a Mean Girls sequel. In a November appearance on “The Tonight Show” Lindsay Chabert, who played Gretchen Wieners in the 2004 film, loved the idea. “Absolutely! I think it would be so fun to see where these women are now and if their kids are the new mean girls,” she said. “I would like to know what they do.”
Unfortunately, Fey hasn’t expressed any interest in a sequel herself, although she said she regretted not doing one right after the first film came out. “At the time we were about to start the conversation about the sequel, and for some reason I was like, ‘No! We shouldn’t be doing that!’” she said in a 2014 interview with Weekly entertainment. “Now I look back and think, ‘Why?’ But now, no – it’s too late.”
Despite this, she has continued to participate in the franchise over the years. Fey wrote the script for the Broadway musical Mean Girls and is currently working with Paramount Pictures on a film adaptation of the musical. “We’re still relatively early. We’re currently looking for a director,” she said diversity in 2021. “I’m excited to see who ends up starring in the film.”
In the meantime, Mean Girls fans can at least celebrate the fact that Lohan himself is back on screen with a starring role in holiday rom-com Falling For Christmas — complete with a cover of Jingle Bell Rock.
