Kelly Clarkson got into the Christmas spirit with her Kellyoke performance on the December 13 episode The Kelly Clarkson Show. It wasn’t all festive and merry, however, as she sang her heartbreaking ballad, “Merry Christmas (To The One I Used To Know).” The song was featured on Kelly’s 2021 Christmas album. When Christmas comesand she wrote it after her painful divorce from Brandon Blackstockfrom whom she separated in 2020.
Kelly looked absolutely stunning for the performance, wearing a red dress and her hair pulled back in an updo. She sparkled with glittery purple eyeshadow and apart from that she wore minimal makeup and accessories. She just sang the song with a piano playing behind her while her talk show was lit by a Christmas tree.
In 2021, Kelly hosted a Christmas special and she got emotional while performing “Merry Christmas (To The One I Used To Know).” She spoke about the inspiration behind the sad song, which she said made her “cry [her] face off” when writing. “There aren’t many Christmas carols for people who are feeling lost and just sad,” Kelly shared. That american idol The winner admitted she wrote the song after putting her two children to bed – she shares the daughter Flow and son remington with Brandon – to bed one night. “I just went through it and I was having a really hard time,” Kelly explained. “It’s been a really tough year for a lot of us.”
The song contains absolutely heartbreaking lyrics, as Kelly sings, “Once a year I let my heart return to you and me, a secret gift I give myself on Christmas Eve. If I could feel a memory instead of turning back time, I would know that the past is all that’s left of you and me.” Kelly has been open with her fans about how hard her divorce has been for her, and this song was one extension of that feeling.
“It was the hardest thing to find my way around,” Kelly continued The Chart Show with Brooke Reese back in June. “I have never had such a difficult project. It’s one of those things where I’m a human and I’m going through something big. Obviously everyone knows there was a big divorce and it’s been two years and it hasn’t been easy with kids. It’s a difficult thing to find your way around.”
