The Golden Globes are back and better than ever, with a new host. Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael will take the stage to host the January awards ceremony. diversity reports.
Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Helen Hoehne shared a statement announcing Carmichael’s upcoming performance and praising his “comedic talent,” which she said provides “audiences with entertaining and engaging, while also providing thought-provoking moments.” delivered that are so important in the times we live in,” per diversity.
Hoehne added, “Jerrod is the special kind of talent this show is calling for to open awards season.”
Though Carmichael has never hosted an awards show, the comedian is quite familiar with NBC, the network that broadcasts the Golden Globe Awards, having recently received an Emmy nomination for hosting Saturday night live back in April. He also served as the creator, writer and director of the carmichael show, which aired on the network from 2015 to 2017. Most recently, Carmichael won an Emmy for writing his comedy special Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel.
The Golden Globes are returning to television after a hiatus last year. The show was pulled from NBC following allegations of racism and sexual harassment within the HFPA in a report by the Los Angeles Times. As a result, the awards ceremony continued as a “private event,” with the likes of Andrew Garfield and Nicole Kidman winning awards without the attention of a television audience.
This year, the show is coming back to television “under a one-year deal that allows the HFPA and [producer Dick Clark Productions] to explore new opportunities for national and global distribution across a variety of platforms in the future,” per The Hollywood Reporter.
But even without the Golden Globes broadcast, this year has been a hectic year for awards shows. From the “slap heard around the world” at the Oscars to Jimmy Kimmel sleeping onstage at the Emmys, awards have never been the mainstay of ceremonies. Could the return of the Golden Globes change that? We’ll just have to see what happens when Carmichael takes the stage for the awards show on January 10, 2023.
