As the granddaughter of King Charles III. Lilibet, daughter of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, is considered a princess following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September thanks to a rule introduced over 100 years ago.
On June 4, 2021, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their daughter into the world at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The little tot is named after her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana.
Although Lili was not given a royal title at birth (like her brother Archie), she is technically now a princess based on the current rules enacted by King George V in 1917. These rules state the title of prince or princess goes to the sons and daughters of the sovereign, grandchildren born to the sons of the sovereign and the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales. Since Lili is a granddaughter of the sovereign, that makes her a princess. Archie is now also considered a prince.
Lili is currently seventh in line to the British throne, followed by Harry and Archie who are fifth and sixth respectively. It is still unclear whether Lili will actually wear her new royal title.
