Episode 5 of yellowstone Season 5 begins with another flashback. John is on his way with Rip and Rowdy. Beth approaches him and Rowdy takes his shot by asking for a kiss. Beth Struts handed Rowdy straight to Rip. She tells Rip to be careful. “See you when you get back,” Beth says. Rip jokes, “I’m not hard to find.”

Even today, Beth is obsessed with the past. “Do you ever think of us?” Beth asks Rip. He replies, “I only think of us.” She talks about it when they were kids. “I’m thinking about now. I think about tomorrow, but I don’t think much about yesterday,” says Rip. Beth admits that “yesterday eats me up”.

Beth confronts her father about granting clemency to Summer. John explains that he only commuted Summer’s sentence and she is under house arrest for the rest. He thinks he can use Summer in understanding the dead wolves’ situation when it spirals out of control. Beth thinks this is an all-around bad idea at the end of the day.

Jamie digs a bigger hole

Monica spots Kayce crying on her porch. He admits he’s worried about Monica, his life and his place in this world. Monica doesn’t want Kayce to quit his job, but Kayce doesn’t want the job to come between them. Monica tells Kayce that John called and invited her to the meeting. Monica thinks this will be a good break for all of them.

Beth finds Rip trying to get everything together for the meeting. She begins to think about going there herself. Rip doesn’t think she means business because it’s 2 days on horseback and the definition of non-luxury. Beth becomes defensive and waits for Rip to ask her to leave.

Jamie keeps finding ways to get himself into trouble. Sarah shows up in his office. He says what happened between them was unprofessional. Sarah shouts at Jamie to back off from what’s going on between them. Jamie clearly believes Sarah has ulterior motives as a relationship with her would prevent him from representing the state against market equities.

Jamie points out that the state hires outside attorneys for litigation, so if that was her plan, she failed. Jamie (and the rest of us) aren’t quite sure what Sarah’s up to, but she’ll make sure she enjoys it. She shows off her sexy lingerie right there in Jamie’s government office.

Beth & Summer have a bloody, brutal fight

The Duttons have a family dinner with John, Beth, Rip, Carter, Kayce, Tate and Monica, along with Summer and John’s assistant. Beth doesn’t hesitate to make dinner awkward by upsetting Summer. Summer doesn’t help at all and questions Gator about the meat he’s serving. Eventually Monica starts laughing because the whole situation is so embarrassing.

Beth asks Summer to go outside. She immediately hits Summer difficult. Summer fights back, calling Beth a “smug, spoiled 40-year-old kid.” They engage in a brutal, devastating and protracted battle on the grass. John thinks it’s about time they got this out of their system.

“Nothing leaves your daughter’s system, sir,” notes Rip. He gets up to check on Beth and Summer outside. The fight still goes strong. Rip berates them for being stupid. “Do you think you will make the other person respect your opinion?” he asks her. He also asks Beth if that’s really the kind of manners he wants to teach Carter.

Rip doesn’t just let Summer get away with it either. He tells her to “shut up and say thank you” or leave. He stresses that they both need to find a way to get along. The thing is, they both don’t want to give up. Rip forces her to go the old school, punch for punch. They keep hitting until Summer starts crying. They strike a truce and Beth then helps her up.

“This is my damn house. You will show respect to me and everyone in it,” Beth tells Summer. Summer claps back, “What respect do I get?” Beth replies, “You get what you give.” As they head back to the house, Summer thinks they should both clean up. Beth doesn’t hide from what she does. “Let them see,” she says.

But not everyone feels the same. Once everyone is back at the dining table, John excuses everyone because he can’t bear to look at them. As she finishes her dinner, Beth pulls out a tooth.

John talks about his children

John and Rip talk after Beth and Summer’s brutal catfight. John thinks Beth gets wilder as she gets older. “What it must feel like to be so free,” says John. He tells Rip that he has one child that he misses (Lee), one child that he feels sorry for (Kayce), and one that he regrets (Jamie). “But I envy this girl, this child,” says John.

Early the next morning, Summer admits she doesn’t know what to do while John is gone. Beth advises Summer to take a walk around the ranch. It might help her understand the Duttons better. Monica says goodbye to Kayce and Tate and tells Kayce to take care of her boy as he is the only one they have. “Yeah, we’ll fix that,” Kayce tells Monica.

John leads the way for the assembly. Monica cries when she sees them leave. “If watching your family go horseback riding doesn’t make you cry, you probably shouldn’t have one,” Monica tearfully tells Summer.
