When Madonna debuted her cone-shaped underwear on the opening night of her tour in Chiba, Japan, she was the talk of the town until she became simply legendary. A year after the Material Girl collection was worn, Gaultier commented on how it all came to light. “When Madonna first called me in 1989, it was two days before my ready-to-wear show and I thought my assistant was joking,” he said The New York Times in 2001. “I was a huge fan. She knew what she wanted — a pinstripe suit, the feminine corsetry. Madonna likes my clothes because they combine the masculine with the feminine.”
