Netflix tends to save its best films for the last few months of the year in order to reach the Oscars, and we can’t imagine Guillermo del Toro’s adorable, whimsical version of that coming up Pinocchio will not be nominated for multiple Oscars at the upcoming 2023 ceremony.
While del Toro records it Pinocchio is not a traditional musical, it features several songs performed by talented performers including Christoph Waltz, David Bradley and Ewan McGregor!
This new version of Pinocchio is very different from the Disney story portrayed in the 1940 animated film and even the recent 2022 live-action remake starring Tom Hanks. This new story is based on the fairy tale by Carlo Collodi and is set in 1930s fascist Italy. Given that it’s del Toro’s, you can imagine that the plot has darker thematic material than the Disney story.

Talented young actor Gregory Mann, who voices Pinocchio, gets to brag about his voice and singing several times throughout the film, as most of the featured songs are by him. Ewan McGregor as Sebastian J. Cricket plays Pinocchio’s conscience,
