In season five of The crownwhich is now being streamed NetflixElizabeth Debicki takes on the role of Princess Diana. The show’s penultimate season follows the characters through the 1990s, arguably the most turbulent for the royal family, with Diana and Charles’ marriage in the rocks and the eyes of the whole world on them. The season follows the couple through their ups and downs, leading to their inevitable divorce. In real life, through the rough press field day, Lady Di still managed to serve looks and the show’s costume designers have captured some of her most memorable looks, from the groundbreaking revenge dress to everyday business-casual ensembles and a t-shirt — literally.
The drama was turned up this season, and so was the fashion. The show’s costume design was created by Emmy Award-winning actress Amy Roberts, who said shine that she didn’t want to completely replicate all the outfits. Instead, she wanted to ensure the team had room to embellish some of Lady Di’s most iconic ensembles.
As mentioned above, season five features some of the late princess’ unforgettable outfits that are still recreated by many today, including her comfortably chic styling of a Harvard crew-neck paired with cycling shorts. It also features some of her most elegant and luxurious looks, cemented through photographs over time. Some of the outfits deviated slightly from the original pieces worn by the Princess of Wales – intentionally, as Roberts notes – but the essence of her evergreen style was captured perfectly.
