Adele has given us the soundtrack to the greatest breakup music of our time. From “Someone Like You” to “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” she allows us to experience the pain of lost love. Outside of the recording studio and offstage, the Grammy Award-winning actress maintains honest relationships with past relationships — both lovers and herself. Of late, she’s focused on the latter relationship.
After years without therapy, Adele says she’s decided to start over. “I stopped blaming myself for my own behavior and the things I would say,” she said on stage at her Vegas show on Dec. 9. Buzzfeed News. “But now I’m doing it because I just want to make sure I recharge every week to make sure I can give you everything.”
Most of her recent sessions have focused on her fear of performing live. “I always get so emotional. I love making music, but there’s something about performing live that really scares and terrifies me,” Adele said during her show in Vegas. She went on to acknowledge that perfectionism was a big driver of this fear. “I’ve always put a lot of pressure on myself that everything has to be perfect, perfect,” she said. “Obviously this show had to be freaking perfect, so I postponed it again.”
She originally began therapy after splitting from husband Simon Konecki shortly after their wedding in 2018. During the height of her divorce, she saw her therapist up to five times a day. “A relationship that’s falling apart, married or not, is really difficult and really traumatic,” she added.
She opened up Fashion in an interview last year about her marriage, stating that she is not happy and feels like she’s just doing the moves. “None of us did anything wrong. Neither of us hurt each other or anything. It just wasn’t right for me anymore. I didn’t want to end up like a lot of other people I knew. I wasn’t miserable miserable, but I would have been miserable if I hadn’t put myself first.”
Adele and Konecki share a 10-year-old son, Angelo, who was a major source of guilt during the divorce. “It made him really unhappy at times. And that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I can ever heal,” she told Vogue.
Once again, Adele proves that vulnerability is a strength. After opening up about her anxiety to her Vegas audience, she apologized for the ups and downs of being her fan, including quitting her original residency in January. “I’m only human and that’s what it took to cancel those shows. I’m as happy as I’ve ever been.” The singer also left the audience with the realization she’s living by now: “Keep your friends close because they’re better than any man, better than any woman. Your friends are for life.”
