Jenna Ortega’s creepy “Wednesday” persona is unbreakable — almost. On December 11, Netflix shared an official season 1 blooper reel with the cast — including Ortega as Wednesday, Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán), Morticia Addams (Catherine Zeta-Jones), Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers), Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White) and more – all while smiling and showing that even on the set of morbid shows like Wednesday, there’s always room for a little fun.
“If you growl at it hard enough, it will go away.”
Filming for the series took place in Bucharest, Romania and provided an immersive setting for Nevermore Academy as well as some unexpected off-screen challenges for the actors. “If you growl at it hard enough, it will go away,” Ortega tells her co-stars while jokingly grimacing at the sound of a plane passing overhead, one of many plane-related interruptions the cast experienced during filming had to endure. The cast take turns unleashing their inner monsters and growling in frustration when they break or trip during a scene, a behind-the-scenes tradition befitting the Addams family.
At one point in the role, Ortega accidentally hits Myers, who plays Wednesday’s roommate Enid, in the face with a flashlight as she climbs through a window. “Oh! Sorry! Did I just slap you in the face?” Ortega asks as she pauses to check on her costar. “Wait. Are you alright?” After making sure Myers is actually okay, Ortega proves that her intrepid character can find humor in moments of uncertainty.
While some actors burst out laughing immediately after forgetting a line, prompting the director to yell “Cut!”, Ortega remains perfectly composed – at least for a few seconds. In true Wednesday fashion, the actress took a deep breath and bit back a laugh until she couldn’t hold it in and burst into a fit of giggles. The whole atmosphere of Wednesday Addams is mysterious and spooky – even her dance moves are haunting – but it’s nice to see that the city’s most macabre Nevermore student also has a sense of humor.
