Keke Palmer and Angela Bassett last worked together when they played a mother-daughter duo in Akeelah and the Bee, which premiered in 2006. Now, 16 years later, the two came together for an interview vanity fair which was shared on December 2nd.
Since Akeelah and the Bee, Bassett – already an Oscar nominee at the time of filming – has been involved in a number of major projects. Most recently, she gave an emotional performance as T’Challa’s mother, Queen Ramonda, in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” As for Palmer, she recently starred Jordan Peele‘s “Nope” and founded her own production company KeyTV.
Highlights of the interview included when Bassett admits she’s seen – and enjoys – Palmer’s viral impressions of her. “I saw you impersonating me on the internet,” Bassett said, laughing. “You’re doing a great job.” Palmer revealed that she started making her impression just for the sake of it Queen Latifahwho loved it. “I used to do it just for her. I just recently started doing it online and all,” Palmer said. She then got her impression of Bassett’s monologue from The Jacksons: An American Dream, with Bassett revealing that the line “I don’t want you no more” was improvised.
Later in the interview, Palmer suggested that she and Bassett work together on a new project and said she even had an idea of what to do. “Have you ever seen that movie called ‘Heartbreakers’?” she asked. “It’s an old movie with Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer LoveHewitt. They are a mother-daughter duo. And they secretly cheat on a bunch of men. And I would love it if we did a version of that film again. I just think we’d kill something like that.” Bassett agreed, saying, “I think we would.”
