The actor who also starred different and Mr. Malcolm’s listFallon confirmed that he was, in fact, wearing prosthetics for the much-discussed scene in which his character was caught naked by Aubrey Plaza’s Harper while putting on swim trunks.
“The truth was, you go into those scenes and you talk to the director and the producers and they’re like, ‘Okay, we’re going to use a prosthetic for that,'” he recalled, adding his response was, “Okay, that sounds good.”
James went on to say that she requested prosthetics to reflect “normal Joe” as he didn’t want the reveal to be distracting, telling Fallon, “Because the scene isn’t about the pee. It’s about power play and sex. It’s about whether he did it on purpose or whether it was an accident and what that means. She says: “I have you. yes i have you Normal Joe.’”
However, as we have all seen, that was the case definitely not the case.
Rebecca Hickey, who serves as the show’s makeup head, came to the set with a larger piece that measured “nine inches flat and about four inches wide.”
James joked, “Well, we go on set and she’s got like a hammer or something. I mean, it’s bigger than that. It’s like she stole it from a donkey in the field. This thing is massive.” He continued, “And me and the director, Mike White, are sitting there and we’re like, ‘That’s average?’ We call our respective partners, like, ‘I’m so sorry.’”
Before the premiere of the episode, James spoke along decision maker‘s Meghan O’Keefe on the nude scene. The actor insisted the scene left room for interpretation, saying: “[Mike White] plays the line between whether Cameron did it on purpose, was it cunning, was it manipulative, or was it just some kind of rather bombastic, body-conscious person who is innocent?
He also shared that he wanted the scene to be “more graphic” but said it was edited by White.
Last month, the HBO series was renewed for a third season after amassing over 7.6 million viewers with the premiere of the second season and hitting an all-time weekly high on HBO Max.
The White Lotus airs Sundays at 9/8 on HBO and is available to stream on HBO Max.
