What is The Noel Diary about?
The Noel Diary stars Justin Hartley as a best-selling author named Jake, who returns to his small hometown after learning of the death of his estranged mother. While cleaning his mother’s house, Jake meets a beautiful young woman named Rachel (played by Barrett Doss), who was adopted as a child and is searching for her birth mother. Rachel’s mother once worked as a nanny for Jake’s family, so she’s hoping Jake can give her a hint. Despite not knowing anything himself, Jake agrees to ride with Rachel to visit Jake’s estranged father and gather more information.
Along the way, Rachel discovers her mother’s old diary. It’s a treasure trove of information about her mother, whose name is Noel, who worked as a nanny for Jake’s family when he was only four years old. Meanwhile, sparks fly between Jake and Rachel. The only problem? Rachel is engaged to be married to a bastard named Andy.

After Jake reconciles with his father, he and Rachel spend the night in a hotel room together, in the great tradition of romantic comedy tropes There was only one bed. The two drink, dance, and celebrate Rachel’s birthday, eventually sleeping together. But the next morning, Rachel feels she made a mistake by cheating on her fiancé, Alan. She slips out in the morning and leaves Jake a message apologizing and telling him things won’t work out between the two. She also tells him that although she now knows where her mother is, she will give up on tracking down her mother. According to Rachel, the journal gave her everything she needed to know.
Jake decides to track down Rachel’s mother himself. He thanks Noel for what she has done for his family and tells her that her daughter Rachel is an amazing person. Then, on Christmas Day, Jake goes for the grand romantic gesture. He stands outside Rachel’s house and calls her, asking her to be with him. Rachel tells Jake to go, and he replies that he will – if she can honestly say she doesn’t love him. After a moment, Rachel says, “I don’t love you,” and Jake leaves. hard break!
But don’t worry, they don’t leave it at that. After the holidays, while Jake prepares to finally leave his mother’s house, he casually looks up as he gets into the car. Rachel is standing across the street in the snow. She smiles at him and he smiles back. And with that the film ends.
While we don’t see them kissing, the implication is clear that Rachel has broken up with Alan (finally!) and is here to start her life with Jake. According to an interview with The Hollywood ReporterDirector Charles Shyer insisted the couple not end up kissing.
“The ending was really tricky,” Shyer said. “It was inspired by the films of Claude Lelouch, which I’m a big fan of. In fact, this is very similar to a Lelouch ending because I didn’t want something so on the nose. The producers kept saying we had to kiss her at the end, but I said no.”

While there is no official word on a possible one Noel’s diary Continuation, at the moment it doesn’t seem likely that The Noel Diary 2 it happens. Neither the cast nor director Charles Shyer have indicated they are considering a sequel. I want to continue I love the process and I love the camaraderie,” he said. “I love what I do. If I drop dead it might hold a camera.”
Where was The Noel Diary filmed?
The Noel Diary takes place in Connecticut in various small towns including Bridgeport, Cornwall Bridge and Ridgefield. There was no Hollywood trick involved here –The Noel Diary was filmed on location at various Connecticut locations. Some real places include RJ Julia Bookseller in Madison, Connecticut; the Griswold Inn in Essex, Connecticut; and City Hall in New Canaan.
While it may look snowy and cold on screen, The Noel Diary was actually filmed in the middle of summer. In conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, director Charles Shyer explained how it all came about, saying, “We started in Vancouver, we had location scouting, hired a crew and everything, but then COVID-19 hit. We got kicked out of Canada and had to move to Connecticut in the middle of summer when it was 90 degrees. Shooting a Christmas film under these conditions was really a challenge.”
