Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac paid tribute to their band member Christine McVie after the legendary singer/songwriter passed away at the age of 79 Instagram on Wednesday November 30 to share the heartbreaking news, which was also shared with the Fleetwood Mac Facebook Side. “There are no words to describe our sadness at the death of Christine McVie,” the post began. “She was truly unique, special and talented beyond measure.”
The message continued, “She was the best musician to have in your band and the best friend to have in your life. We were so lucky to have a life with her. Individually and collectively, we treasured Christine immensely and are grateful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so missed.”
Less than an hour before Stevie’s post, Christine’s family confirmed her death to her Instagram report and said she died “peacefully” in a hospital surrounded by family members after a “brief illness”. They concluded: “We kindly ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this extremely painful time and we want everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being and adored musician who was loved by all.” . RIP Christine McVie.”
Born Christine Perfect in England the musician married the bassist John McVie and officially joined the legendary Fleetwood Mac band in 1971 after beginning her musical career with a band called Chicken Shack Rolling Stone. She quickly made a name for herself writing and/or co-writing several hits from her iconic 1977 album rumours, including “Don’t Stop” and “You Make Loving Fun” as well as “Hold Me”, “Little Lies” and “Over My Head”. The album itself was a testament to the band’s personal struggles, with Stevie’s relationship with the lead guitarist Lindsay Buckingham along with the McVie’s marriage disintegrated.
After an 18-year hiatus from the band due to her fear of flying, per diversityChristine returned to the Fleetwood Mac recording and touring line-up in 2014. About a year later in an interview with the New YorkerPer the drain, Christine revealed the meaning behind a silver chain around her wrist. “Stevie gave me this necklace,” she said at the time. “It used to have a diamond nib on it. It’s a metaphor, you know. That the chain of the band will never be broken. I certainly don’t. Not from me again.”
