Reese Witherspoon brings back another of her nostalgic classics. Dubbed Tracy Flick Can’t Win, a sequel to the 1999 dark comedy Election is currently in the works, as originally reported by meeting on December 8th. The sequel, which has no estimated release date, is being filmed for Paramount+, with The Morning Show actress reprising her role as Tracy Flick and producing for her media company Hello Sunshine.

Academy Award winner Alexander Payne, who served as co-writer and director of Election, returns in the same capacity on the film. It’s not yet clear if other cast members from the original film, including Matthew Broderick and Chris Klein, will be involved.

Although details of the film are still scarce, “Tracy Flick Can’t Win” is based on the Sequel novel “Wahl”. same name. The follow-up book, also written by Tom Perrotta and published in June 2022, follows Flick in her forties as she works in a New Jersey public high school. In the midst of the #MeToo era, she reflects on her relationship with her former high school teacher as she competes for the newly available principal role. In her private life, the former student politician now has a 10-year-old daughter and a doctor friend.

The Election film garnered a lot of attention at awards shows in the late ’90s, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Independent Spirit Awards for Best Feature, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Witherspoon herself was nominated for both a Golden Globe and a Spirit Award for her performance.

Paramount+ and Witherspoon representatives did not immediately respond to POPSUGAR’s request for comment on the upcoming film.
