Kate Middleton and Prince William are spending a short three days in the United States for a tour focused on the environment and climate change. On Wednesday, November 30, Middleton lands in Boston, Massachusetts and is already using her wardrobe to pay tribute to her late mother-in-law, Prince Diana. In a deep aubergine Alexander McQueen suit and a coordinated turtleneck underneath, Middleton tucked her hair behind her ears to reveal a pair of the late king’s iconic two-tiered sapphire and diamond earrings.
The earrings feature a double sapphire and diamond cluster; one hangs from the other with a single diamond hanging between each. Each cluster consists of a cabochon sapphire center stone and diamonds on the outside (the top features eight diamonds, the white undersides are surrounded by nine).
This isn’t the first time Middleton has sported those stunning teardrops. Back in June this year she was spotted at the annual Trooping the Color event wearing the same pair as part of a birthday celebration for the late Queen Elizabeth II.
While Diana herself wore the earrings to several public occasions, she owned two pairs that looked remarkably similar. It was widespread misreported These earrings, which Middleton took with him to Boston, are the exact same ones the late princess chose for memorable appearances like a 1985 White House dinner where she famously danced with John Travolta. Although they have comparable characteristics, these double clusters feature larger sapphires; additional diamonds on the sides; and the jewels touch edge to edge without diamonds separating them.
