Actor, entrepreneur, mother of three, certified rom-com queen — there are few accolades that have managed to evade Kate Hudson. Despite this, the multi-faceted star still manages to surprise us. In a December 12 appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon‘ Hudson confirmed that her debut album is officially on the way. “I’ve been making a record for a year,” she said on the show.

Hudson explained that the latest push to record an album came early in the pandemic. Although she always scoffed when asked about her career regrets in interviews (“I’m [in my] early 40s. Not yet.”) During this time, Hudson realized that she would actually regret not pursuing her interest in music. She told Fallon, “I actually write. I’ve been writing music since I was 19 and I’ve never shared it. And so I just thought that this would be one of my big regrets.”

Although she has made her name in acting, Hudson said music is one of her true passions. “I love to sing,” she said. (Fans of hers may already know this from her appearance in Sia’s 2021 film Music, or from her Doo-wop cover from Ariana Grande‘s “7 Rings” in January.) “I have no expectations. I just want to put out a record and I’m doing it.”

Hudson originally teased the album in April, with a photo of yourself midrehearsal, singing on stage with guitarist and cameraman. “Finally realized it’s time to say f#%! it and saaaannngg!!!!!” Hudson captioned the image along with the hashtags “#albumincoming” and “#myikigai” — a Japanese term for something that gives meaning or purpose to life.

From her “Tiny Dancer” singalong on Almost Famous to her unforgettable “You’re So Vain” duet on How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Hudson was never afraid to belt it out. Now that new music is officially confirmed, her album can’t be out soon enough, but as she revealed to Fallon, we’ll just have to wait a while before the record finally releases in 2023.
