The end of Firefly Lane Season 2 Part 1 has a heartbreaking revelation that Kate has inflammatory breast cancer, an aggressive form of cancer that needs immediate treatment. Firefly Lane Season 2 Episode 9 ends with Kate’s diagnosis, so it’s too early to tell if she will die from her illness or if treatment will save her.

Does Kate die in the Firefly Lane books?

Unfortunately, Kate’s chances on the show don’t look too good. Kate dies of inflammatory breast cancer in the books and it is important to the story because novelist Kristin Hannah was influenced by her real life as her mother had late stage breast cancer.

However, the plot in the novel plays out a little differently. Kate falls ill much earlier and is noticeably worse while Tully is in Antarctica. Tully returns home in time to say goodbye to Kate before she dies.

On the show, Tully is already in Antarctica when Kate receives her diagnosis. I suppose the show will make Tully come back early or something. I can’t imagine the writers being cruel enough to kill Kate without her ever reconciling with her best friend. Besides, who knows? The show could change things altogether and make Kate recover from her cancer.
