Becky G and Sebastian Lletget just announced their engagement, but they’ve always been one of our favorite celebrity couples. The 25-year-old singer and actor has been in a relationship with the 30-year-old soccer star since 2016.
Despite their fame, the couple actually met in the most old-fashioned way: being introduced through mutual friends. As J-14 reported from a 2017 radio interview with Mega 96.3, it was a somewhat awkward connection at first. While Becky G was filming Power Rangers with Naomi Scott, the two became friends and Scott’s husband, Jordan Spence, played soccer alongside Lletget. Scott and Spence came up with the idea of bringing Becky G and Lletget together and it seems they are expert matchmakers!
“[Our introduction] kind of came about while we were shooting the film. The way we were introduced, me and Sebastian, was through my costar Naomi. Her husband – she’s 23, they’ve been married a few years now – and [he] played football together, he and Sebastian. So Nae met me and said, ‘Girl, you’re amazing! You deserve to be with a Man!’” she recalled at the time.
It took a bit of persuasion, though. Becky G went on to explain that despite her co-star’s insistence at the time, she wasn’t quite that keen on the idea of going out on a date. But a video from Lletget changed her mind in a very good way.
“I said, ‘No, I don’t want to be with anyone. I’ve been there, done that [with] the relationship thing. I’m focused right now. I am fine. I’m doing well.’ She says, “It’s okay, it’s okay, I already know who you’re going to marry. It’s alright, it’s alright,” Becky G captioned the radio station. “She’s talking to her husband and he’s like, ‘Oh yeah, Sebby, Sebby.’ And I wonder who is this Sebby guy? what are they talking about Then she shows me a video of him and I try to downplay it because I’m like, ‘That’s him fine, good looking. What’s happening?’ It kind of led to everything. He came out of nowhere. He came out of nowhere.”
So Becky G did what anyone would do: she followed him on social media. She told POPSUGAR in 2021, “I followed him on Twitter and he followed me back, and I remember it being like that ghostly ‘I know you exist, you know I exist’ thing.” She explained, “I waited a few days past my 19th birthday just to sound older, which is so funny to me now… he was about 23 at the time… so I slid into the DM really hard and I was like, ‘Hi what’s up?’ So groundbreaking! … Honestly, we became friends first. We vibrated so much. I lived in Vancouver and he lived here in LA and played for Galaxy so it wasn’t like we could go on a date. We really felt compelled to get to know each other and it was nice.”
Becky G later described their first date in 2017 Instagram Post congratulating her new boyfriend on a career milestone. “On our first date, we talked about everything under the moon…literally. I remember stuffing my face with sushi and talking about our dreams, goals, vision, where we see ourselves…everything we talked about that day is doing or working toward now. Crazy how fast time has passed,” she wrote.
And the couple has been together ever since. The secret of their happy relationship? Unwavering support for one another. Becky G tells Hi! In 2019, Lletget is so much more to her than her boyfriend — he’s her best friend and biggest fan.
“My relationship with Sebastian is something very beautiful because he’s not only my friend but also my best friend… There’s nothing I can’t talk to him about and I think it’s very important to have that support from yours to have partners. He helped me become more independent. I think as a woman in this industry it is very important to have a partner who supports you.”
In 2020, she told POPSUGAR that the COVID-19 lockdowns gave her and Lletget time to slow down and enjoy each other’s company. “I’ve never been able to enjoy my apartment with my boyfriend so much,” she explained. “This is the first time we’ve had uninterrupted time together to really just bond. I love it.”
She told POPSUGAR in 2021 that they’re not currently watching movies because they’re so busy. “Either Seb or I end up asleep, so we never finish the movie,” she explained. “We both work so much, and every time we’ve tried to sit down and watch a movie, we’re more like the TV series types, and even then it’s still difficult for us to keep up because of our schedules and we miss each other.” always. But we saw ‘Ted Lasso’ together and we had the best time. We were so impressed with the quality of the series, it was amazing.”
