Al met Deborah Roberts in 1990 while she was a correspondent at NBC TODAY, persons reported. Deborah told the outlet that her husband-to-be was “so cute” when they met, and he “showed me pictures of his daughter and talked about his family.” Deborah was posted to Miami but kept in touch with boyfriend Al via email and returned to New York City, NY upon her return TODAY was filmed, Al had separated from his first wife. They then got back together and began a friendship again.
“He was a nice guy but kind of annoying, overly talkative. I just didn’t see him as a friend,” she said. Eventually, the two became more than friends after Al checked on her apartment when she had to take a trip to Barcelona, Spain, to cover the 1992 Olympics. He restocked her closets and fridge and left her a sweet “welcome home” note and flowers for her return. A week later they had their first date and it led to a romance.
The lovebirds got engaged in 1994 after Al proposed to her in the Grand Canyon, and they wed a year later at St. Thomas Church in NYC. “Deborah decided to resign. Her career suffered as a result. You always feel guilty about it,” Al continued, before Deborah added, “That I felt deep in my heart that I sacrificed more at times, but I also think he listened to me too and tried to feel a bit of my pain.”
Al and Deborah celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 2020 and are still very close. In 2021, Deborah gushed about her longtime husband. “I try to learn from Al every day.
