There are a number of beauty trends online – but not all bring the desired success. We took a closer look at one and can tell you whether it’s worth imitating.

It is not without reason that bananas are among the most popular types of fruit in Germany: They give you energy, are easy to transport and can also be used perfectly as a natural sweetener in cakes, cookies and the like. But now they are also supposed to be used as a beauty miracle cure. Because a trend is going viral on TikTok and Instagram, in which banana peels in particular are hyped – and dark circles under the eyes are supposed to disappear.

Banana peels against dark circles – that’s the trend

A TikTok video shows how it’s done: Use a spoon to scrape together the threads – the so-called phloems – of the fruit and mix them with a skin care product of your choice. Put the banana cream mixture on the skin under the eye and leave it on for five to ten minutes.

Do Bananas Really Help Dark Circles?

But is the fruit really suitable for our skincare routine? We asked ecotrophologist Jessica Bolewski. “Bananas are extremely healthy and can have a positive effect on the skin’s appearance – as long as they are eaten and not just applied externally to the skin. Because they only develop their full potential in the body.”

Magnesium, potassium and phosphorus relieve symptoms of stress such as insomnia and thus prevent dark circles in a natural way. And bananas have another benefit: They’re rich in antioxidants. “These intercept free radicals and protect our cells from damage and premature skin aging. This helps the skin to stay firm and fresh for longer,” says the food expert.

This helps instead

So to sum up: Bananas are less suitable as an under-eye cream, but as food they are. A trend that we certainly don’t have to pay too much attention to. But what to do with dark circles? There is another, more effective beauty hack on the web. Here’s how it works: Put a spoon in the freezer and press gently on the lower eye area in the morning. The cold causes the blood vessels to constrict and the metabolism gets going. Chilled cucumber slices are also pleasant. Be careful if you have sensitive skin. The spoons must not be too cold, otherwise they will damage the top layer of skin.
