A bittersweet occasion. Aaron Carterhis twin sister, Angel Konradshe accepted Instagram account on Wednesday, December 7, to celebrate their 35th birthday together with the late pop star in a heartbreaking post. “I want to start by sharing how much I appreciate all the birthday wishes,” she began in the caption. “Even though it’s incredibly tough today, I’m overwhelmed by your love and support…thank you from the bottom of my heart. Angel continued to remember her sister’s death Leslie Carter at the age of 25 in 2012 and Aaron’s death on November 5. “And now, over a decade later, I’m forced to once again confront the extreme sadness of the death of a sibling,” she continued. “This time it’s my beloved twin Aaron. We had an incredible bond… and now… he’s gone.”

In the accompanying childhood photo, Angel and Aaron appeared to be around 7 years old. Angel wore a dress and hat while Aaron, who was missing a front tooth, wore a purple athletic jersey and appeared to be carrying a matching backpack. In her caption, Angel also addressed the issue of the mental illness and addiction that took Leslie’s life, per E! news, and is suspected of playing a role at Aarons — he had only been in outpatient rehab in September. However, a cause of death has not yet been released.

“When we lost Leslie I was blind and shocked,” she wrote. “With Aaron, on the other hand, we tried everything. In fact, two days before he died, I spoke to him and begged him again to let us help. Little did I know this would be the last time I would ever hear his voice. And now I’m sitting here on our birthday trying to come to terms with this unimaginable loss from an untreated mental illness and the addiction it has led to.”

Angel then heartbreakingly spilled her heart out to her 65,000 followers. “Aaron’s death was the worst day of my life,” she shared. “I’ve loved him since we were born… it feels like a piece of my soul is gone. And yet, despite all that pain, his death lit a fire in me. I feel called and committed to helping other families and continuing the conversation to further break the stigma surrounding mental illness.”
