Much has been written about retinols on this blog and elsewhere, I don’t know why, but retinol is constantly being ‘rediscovered’. In this article, I will try to explain retinols in a more informative way, you can find retinol-containing product recommendations in this article 💖;

What do retinols do for your skin? What does retinol do?
- Prevents the formation of wrinkles: It is very effective not only on existing wrinkles, but also on wrinkles that begin to form!
- Brightens the skin: It removes all the dead skin etc. on your upper skin. We can say that it literally renews your skin, leaving you with a brighter and healthier skin.
- It clears acne: By helping you keep your pores clean, it also prevents the formation of different types of acne such as blackheads, acne, cystic acne.
- It also lightens the color of scars/stains: thus, it also lightens the color of hyperpigmentation or acne scars from the sun, making them less visible.
Retinols Slow Your Aging!
Until your early 30s, your skin cells are renewed every 28 days, but in your mid-30s this cycle starts to slow down and starts to be renewed every 50, 60 or 70 days instead of every 28 days. This slowness is reflected on our skin as signs of aging.
Retinols help speed up cell regeneration. Retinols can make your skin look younger than it is! but there’s one more thing to keep in mind: retinols also work very slowly. Maybe you should use it regularly for at least 3 months or more for a visible effect. I talked a lot about this in my previous retinol article so I think you understand what I mean now 😂
Not All Retinols Are The Same!
Retinol is a general name given to vitamin A and its derivatives. That’s why there are many types of Retinol.
Retinol actually retinoidA subgroup of vitamins, briefly the name given to the general group of vitamins A and their derivatives. I’ll list them from the least powerful to the strongest. retinol for beginners My suggestion is in the first place;
- Retinyl Palmitate (Low strength and beginner’s version)
- Retinol (Most popular and one level stronger)
- Retinaldehyde (even stronger than Retinol)
- Adapalene (As far as I know, a prescription version and other known name for acne treatment Differin)
There may also be stronger retinols that dermatologists can prescribe. My mini-routine for beginners is to add one of the products containing Retinyl Palmitate, which is in the first place, to their skin care routine, use it for at least 1 year, and then switch to the other level of retinol. I have explained this formula in a little more detail in the article below, you may want to take a look there;
Also, when you use the lowest strength, you may not really see any effect, and you’re right, there won’t be much noticeable at first, but studies have proven that even the lowest strength (2 different retinoid acids (different strengths) provide the same effect) in long-term use . For those wondering about the research: tic
Important notes;
Choose the right strength retinol for your skin. For this, you should know your skin type well;
For beginners & Sensitive skin; Retinyl Palmitate
For normal skinned; Retinol or Retinaldehyde
For oily & acne prone skin; Adapalene or Differin
Using a lot does not mean a better effect!
Using a lot of a product can make you feel like you’ll get results much faster, but that’s not true and you should never do it with products where too much can be dangerous, like retinols.
If it is in the consistency of a serum, it will be enough to use as much as a pea, if it is creamy, it will be enough to make a thin layer on your entire skin, you really do not need more. I wrote in the previous retinol article how much you should use at intervals of how many days, you can look there.
The day you use retinols, do not use acid, peeling and intense acne creams, which are considered strong chemicals, on your skin again.
If you have such products in your skin care routine, you can spare 1 day for retinol and not use those products that day and plan it according to you. You can also discuss this with your dermatologist.
Never forget to use sunscreen in general, but if you’re using a product with retinoic acid (or any other type of acid that can be irritating to your skin), never skip it! 💖 Make sure your sunscreen is above SPF 30.
Retinols aren’t just for wrinkles!
I think you understand this when you see it in the photo above, but retinols are generally only mentioned in the market as an anti-wrinkle product/substance. Yes, although it does great work on wrinkles, it can also turn your skin into a luminous perfect marble because retinols accelerate the cell renewal of the skin. It supports the production of collagen and elastin, thus making your skin look tighter, cleaner and the pores are healed. It also removes blemishes on the skin.
My favorite thing about retinols is that like most other products, it doesn’t just have an effect from outside the skin, but because it interacts directly with the cells, this beautiful skin stays with you forever.
