Meghan Markle and her mother Doria Ragland have a relationship like no other. From her adorable yoga sessions to Meghan’s sweet tributes, it’s pretty clear that Ragland is number one in her book. During Meghan’s wedding reception in May 2018, the former ‘Suits’ actor made a point of praising her mother in her speech, thanking her “for not just being there today, but being there her entire life.”
While Ragland maintains a private life, she recently appeared in Meghan and Prince Harry’s new Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, which aired its first episode on December 8th. On the series, Meghan reflects on what it was like growing up with her mother, saying, “I grew up in LA and all I remember is my mother telling me stories about how they would take me to the grocery store and tell women, ‘Whose child is that?’ She says, ‘It’s my child.’ And they say, “You must be the nanny. Where’s her mother?” Because I was really fair skinned and my mom was darker.”
Ragland split from Meghan’s father Thomas Markle when Meghan was two years old. “We were close to my mother and her grandmother. And my sister was close and my girlfriends were close, so we had a nice network of women who really helped me raise Meg,” Ragland said in the documentary. “She was always so easy to get along with, very personable to make friends with. You know, she was a very sensitive kid, very mature. I remember asking Meg if I felt like her mother and she told me I felt like her older control sister. I have never forgotten that.”
