At the visit Good morning AmericaMindy Kaling had some choice words to say about the NBC sitcom The office and if today would be alright The actress called the show “inappropriate” and said she “may never” show it to her kids.
Kaling served as original cast member and writer for the series, and also served as executive producer alongside her close friend BJ Novak when the show aired from 2005-2013. However, while there’s no denying that the sitcom made its mark on popular culture, she joked it hasn’t aged well.
She was asked when she plans to introduce herself The office to her children, Katherine and Spencer, to which she replied, “I think maybe never.”
Kaling said the show was “so inappropriate now,” Kaling explained, “The writers that I’m still in touch with now, we always talk about how much of this show we probably couldn’t do right now.”
She continued, “Tastes have changed, and honestly, what offends people has changed so much now. I think that’s actually one of the reasons the show is so popular, because people feel like there’s something fearless or taboo that the show is talking about.
However, when her kids decide they want to watch the series, she doesn’t seem to stand in her way. “I think by the time they’re teenagers they’re probably going to want it, it seems like 15-year-old boys are the biggest fans of The Office right now,” Kaling said.
During her visit, she also reflected on what her character, meme queen Kelly Kapoor (cue the Number One: How Dare You GIFs) is up to in 2022. “I think she would have stopped Dunder Mifflin becoming an influencer, and then [she] probably canceled almost immediately,” Kaling said. “I would see that for her. In fact, most of the characters on that show would have been canceled by now.”
canceled or not The office is an American adaptation of the British television series of the same name directed by Ricky Gervais. In addition to Kaling and Novak, the cast was directed by Steve Carell and starred John Krasinski, Jenna Fisher, Angela Kinsey, Rainn Wilson and others as employees of the office supplies wholesaler Dunder Mifflin.
Kaling certainly knows the show cover to cover given its heavy commitment, but it’s clear that it has stood the test of time. In 2020, the sitcom was called tThe most streamed TV show by Nielsen (back when it was streaming on Netflix). And then, when NBC acquired the exclusive streaming rights to Peacock, the show was free to stream, along with bonus content, for a limited time to ensure smooth transmission.
It seems the show is doing pretty well in 2022, even if the odds are against it.
The office is currently streaming on Peacock.
